William Arthur Hamp

• Occupation. William immigrated to Adelaide Sa via Duke of Roxburgh. He was employed as Farmer, Teamster, Foreman

On Saturday Mr. William Arthur Hamp, one of the State's oldest pioneers, died at his residence, Frederick Street, Unley. He landed in Holdfast bay with his parents in the Ship Duke of Roxburgh in 1838. In 1844 his father took up land in the Port Lincoln district for pastoral purposes, and in that district was murdered by the blacks. At the age of six years, Mr. Hamp had lost both his parents. He was a member of the first overland telegraph party in 1870, and it believed he was the first white man to pass through the MacDonnell Ranges. Mr. Hamp
was an expert bushman, and on many occasions when in the wilds of Australia his only companion was a blackboy.

• Adoption. William, was fostered out to George and Elizabeth Haines, a family of Quakers, and he inherited their property in Lyndoch Valley.

William married Eliza Gertrude Paddock, daughter of Richard Paddock and Rebecca Shingler, on 4 Feb 1865 in Sheoak Log, South Australia. (Eliza Gertrude Paddock was born in Jun 1845 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, England, died on 27 Nov 1908 in Eastwood, Adelaide, South Australia and was buried on 29 Nov 1908 in North Rd Cemetary, Adelaide, South Australia.)

William next married Sarah Anne Bourne, daughter of Francis Bourne and Unknown, on 16 May 1857 in Union Chapel, Lyndoch, South Australia. (Sarah Anne Bourne was born in 1826 in Rettendon, Essex, England, died on 6 Aug 1864 in Lyndoch, South Australia and was buried in Lyndoch, South Australia.)
