General Notes:
The following is a copy of a letter written by Mary Burden to her sister Elizabeth after the marriage of their brother Thomas to Sarah Elizabeth Good at Knighton - on - Teme Church Worcestershire..
1st September 1849
My dear sister I am quite sorry I have not been able to write you an account of the wedding. Monday was the Bible meeting- Tuesday market day, although a late hour at night I cannot refrain sending you a line or two at dear Bessie's request ; the wedding went off well, twenty eight in number walked to the Church all in white except the Bride and Mrs Jones. The former wore a short silk dress, white tulle drawn bonnet with blond Scharf which looked very chaste. The luncheon was laid out with great taste with Poultry, Game, pastry, Jellies, custards etc in abundance - the Wedding cake in the Centre. The dining room was spacious, and decorated with flowers and evergreens, and the Initials T and E for Thomas and Elizabeth in flowers over the fire place, and a wreath of flowers over the large Iron Gates at the entrance of the lawn. The house is an old Manor House, but nicely done up. The Clergyman who presided was invited to the feast, and he declared that at all the weddings he was ever at it surpassed all he had ever witnessed. Toasts and speeches went round the table of guests, and before the old gentleman took his departure, he read a chapter, and concluded with prayer, and offered up a blessing for the newly married couple. After the bride and bridegroom had started off on their tour, the rest of the company drank tea in the beautiful lawn in front of the house surmounted with evergreens and shrubs. I have just given you a faint sketch of the happy day. The wish of all was that you had been of the wedding party one circumstance we regret, that Edward's illness prevented Bessie's marriage taking place as was intended, but hope it will not long be delayed, as he is getting stronger every day, and hope soon to aprize you of the time. You must excuse my enlarging this time. Your brother, Nieces and Nephews unite with me in Kindest Love, and Believe me - Your affectionate Sister M Burden.
The Wedding breakfast was at Aston Court - the home of the brides Cousin, Samuel Clarke Good. They walked through the fields to the old Church, Elizabeth, another Thomas's sisters was to marry her cousin Edward McMullan Burden at the same time which was postponed on account of his illness.
