John Chipp Hamp
Noted events in his life were: • Place. Founded "Chickerloo Station" • Immigration: to Adelaide Sa via Duke of Roxburgh. • Fact. The death is announced this morning of mr. John Chipp Hamp at his residence Fairford Streeet, Unley. He arrived in the State in 1838, and six years later he went to tie Port lincoln District where in 1848 his father was killed by the blacks. Mr. J. C. Hamp engaged, in pastoral pursuits, and for years owned the Chickerloo station, near Elliston. About 10 years ago he settled near Port Augusta, and four years since he took up his residence at Unley. The late Mr. J. C. Hamp, the well-known lawyer, was a son of the deceased, who left a widow, five sons (Mr. H. Hamp, Thurga, Gawler Ranges; Mr. Arthur Hamp, Paraklia, Port Augusta; Mr. E. Hamp, Yarley, Port Augusta; Mr. Walter Hamp, Wirraminna; and Mr. W. E. Hamp, stock salesman, Adelaide), and one daughter (Mrs. W. Gratton, Franklin Harbor). The deceased knew the Port Lincoln natives well, and understood their language perfectly, speaking it as fluently as they did. He was greatly instrumental in pioneering the west coast district, and was one of the first to perceive the possibilities it has, since developed. John married Ellen Donnelly, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, in 1858 in South Australia, Australia. (Ellen Donnelly was born in 1834 in Cheltenham, Gloustershire, England, died on 2 Oct 1921 at home, Swain Ave, Rose Park, Adelaide, South Australia and was buried in Mitcham Cemetery, South Australia.) |
