Rolf's family are from German descent with grandparents still in Berlin.
His parents are divorced and his mother lives in Coober Pedy South Australia. He has a half brother (Rik) by the same father.

Rolf married Janet Louise Morton Siddall, daughter of Olwyn Ronald Morton Siddall and Dorothy Marjorie Burden. (Janet Louise Morton Siddall was born on 12 May 1953 in Glenelg Community Hospital, Glenelg, South Australia.)
